TIPS FOR YOUR STAY

Pre‑race shake‑outs & light adventures
  • Lagoa das Sete Cidades sunrise jog – 5‑km loop on the crater rim; breathtaking vistas without ruining your legs.

  • Stand‑up paddle on Lagoa das Furnas – calm water, perfect for loosening stiff travel muscles.

  • Tea estate run‑through – jog the trails that weave through Europe’s only tea plantations (Gorreana & Porto Formoso) and finish with a free tasting.

Post‑race recovery & relaxation
  • Thermal soak at Poça da Dona Beija or Terra Nostra – natural 38 °C pools to soothe tired quads (evening entry until 23:00).

  • Caldeira Velha waterfall plunge – alternating hot‑spring pools and a cold waterfall boost circulation.

  • Sports massage on demand – partner clinics in Ponta Delgada offer race‑weekend discounts; bookable when you register.

High‑adrenaline add‑ons
  • Canyoning in Ribeira dos Caldeirões – rappel waterfalls and jump crystal pools (half‑day; all gear supplied).

  • Shark‑&‑Manta snorkeling at Banco Condor – seasonal pelagic encounters (Sept. is prime).

  • Surf session at Santa Bárbara beach – board rental and début lessons 15 min from the city.

Family‑friendly excursions
  • Whale‑watching cruises – four departures daily; 98 % sighting success in September.

  • Islet of Vila Franca do Campo – snorkel the volcanic caldera turned marine reserve (limited visitor slots – reserve early).

  • Pineapple greenhouses tour – short, fun and sweet (literally!) in the Arrifes district.

Taste of the island
  • “Cozido das Furnas” lunch – traditional stew slow‑cooked in volcanic soil; pre‑order to secure a table.

  • Cheese & craft‑beer pairing – local dairies meet Azorean micro‑brews in a guided evening session.

  • Street‑food crawl in downtown PDL – sample lapas (limpets), queijadas and gin‑based Azorean cocktails.
